Houston, TX- May 17, 2025 KTSU 90.9, “The Choice”, hosted an afternoon of love, music, and conversation at its first Old School Love podcast show, catered to the seasoned listeners of the station.
Donna Franklin, Marcus Session, Chris Johnson, on-air personalities of KTSU’s Impact Houston Live, hosted the panel alongside guest panelists Jeff Hayes, Dunbeezy, and Kobi Mendenhall. Georgia Lovell, a licensed professional counselor, joined the panel to add a psychological approach to the conversation about adults dating in their second half of life.
“I think the main struggle for the 50 plus [population] is, first of all, how do we find one another and how do we not bring our own baggage into relationships so that we can actually get to freely understand and know the people who we are pursuing or who is pursing us so that we can go in open-minded, flexible, and non-judgemental,” Lovell said.
The demographic of adults over 50 is often underserved, overlooked, and underrepresented in conversations surrounding love and relationships. The implementation of dating through social media has dramatically shifted how these singles find romance.
The panelists discussed the juxtaposition of dating before and after the age of social media and the instant gratification that modern dating requires and provides. Many societal expectations plague all individuals, but specifically older generations, when seeking and navigating dating in the modern world.
With KTSU’s A.C.C.E.S.S. program, I attended as a volunteer, writer, and fly-on-the-wall for the Old School Love podcast show. As a Gen Z college student, I discovered that my generation and the “Old School” demographic have more similarities in dating than we realize.
Dating in the digital age has led to the detriment of dating in the modern world for both the youth and the seasoned, causing a lack of in-person connection and the increased pressure to communicate and reveal attraction quickly.
However, for many, this era in life represents a time of renewal. Ultimately, all people, regardless of age, desire love in its truest, pure form, void of the gimmicks and games that modern dating presents.
