Background

KTSU 90.9FM, “The Choice,” participated in the 5th annual Houston Reads Day on February 28th, supporting literacy initiatives in the Houston community.

The event, in partnership with Literacy Now, brought together over 400 volunteers to read to more than 15,000 Pre-K-5th grade students across 39 Houston-area schools, encompassing 685 classrooms. Houston Reads Day aims to raise awareness about the literacy crisis and support Literacy Now’s Reading Intervention program.

Literacy Now provides reading intervention, reading readiness, and trained volunteer mentors to students, along with parent engagement programming. Since 2006, their programs have impacted over 26,000 children and parents.

KTSU’s Community Engagement Liaison, Ariel Pirela, and Events Coordinator, Dortia Hatchett, represented the station at Monahan Elementary School, joining other community volunteers to read to students.

“Participating in Houston Reads Day aligns with KTSU’s commitment to community engagement and supporting educational initiatives,” said Ariel Pirela. “It was a rewarding experience to connect with the students and contribute to their literacy development.”

“We are pleased to have been a part of this important event,” added Dortia Hatchett. “KTSU looks forward to continuing to support literacy efforts in the Houston community.”

KTSU 90.9FM remains dedicated to serving the community through music, news, and educational outreach.
