Objective:

To provide students with interdisciplinary, hands-on experiences in the music, radio, and entertainment industries, emphasizing real-world application of classroom knowledge. This program prepares students for careers in production, engineering, management, marketing, and promotions through partnerships with industry professionals.

Program Structure:

  1. Core Components:

    • Workshops & Seminars:
      • Weekly sessions with industry professionals in fields like music production, audio engineering, event planning, business management, and marketing.
      • Specialized masterclasses on topics such as lighting direction, production management, camera operation, and video editing, led by experts from partner production companies.
    • Project-Based, Rotational Program Learning:
      • Students will be grouped into interdisciplinary teams to work on real-world projects that require collaboration across different fields. Examples include producing a live-streamed concert, managing a radio show, or developing a multimedia marketing campaign.
      • Students will have the opportunity to rotate between disciplinary tracks leading up to the final capstone project, guaranteeing versatility in their skillset.
    • Internships & Mentorships:
      • Partnerships with local production companies, music studios, radio stations, and event venues to build a pipeline for  internships  roles such as audio engineer, lighting director, production manager, camera operator, and video editor. 
      • Each student will be paired with a mentor in their area of interest, providing guidance and professional development throughout the program.
    • Capstone Project:
      • The program will culminate in a large-scale, student-produced event, such as a music festival, live concert broadcast, or multimedia production. This event will integrate all aspects of the program, from production and engineering to management, marketing, and promotion. 
  1. Areas of Focus: Students will be able to rotate between three focus areas of their choice and explore those areas for three month increments throughout the academic year.

    • Music & Audio Production:
      • Key Skills: Sound design, mixing, mastering, music composition, and studio management.
      • Activities: Students will work in professional studios and on-site at events, learning the technical aspects of music and audio production. They’ll collaborate with artists, create soundtracks, and manage live audio during events.
    • Radio Broadcasting:
      • Key Skills: Scriptwriting, on-air presentation, show production, and audio editing.
      • Activities: Students will produce and host radio shows, manage station operations, and learn about the logistics of radio programming, including integrating live broadcasts from events.
    • Event Production:
      • Key Skills: Event planning, stage management, lighting and sound coordination, vendor relations, and logistics.
      • Activities: Students will plan and execute live events, manage stage setups, coordinate lighting and sound systems, and ensure smooth event operations.
    • Production Management & Engineering:
      • Key Skills: Production planning, team coordination, technical direction, and resource management.
      • Activities: Students will work with production companies to manage technical aspects of events, from setup to breakdown, including overseeing lighting, sound, and camera operations. 
    • Camera Operation & Video Editing:
      • Key Skills: Camera handling, shot composition, video editing, and post-production.
      • Activities: Students will learn to operate cameras during live events, film interviews and performances, and edit footage for final production. They’ll work closely with video editors to produce polished, professional content.
    • Business Management:
      • Key Skills: Project management, budgeting, contract negotiation, team leadership, and entrepreneurship.
      • Activities: Students will manage the financial and operational aspects of their projects, learning to run events and productions as profitable ventures.
    • Marketing & Promotions:
      • Key Skills: Branding, social media strategy, public relations, advertising, and content creation.
      • Activities: Students will develop marketing campaigns for events, radio shows, and music releases, learning to create compelling promotional materials and engage audiences across multiple platforms.
  1. Evaluation & Feedback:

    • Performance Reviews:
      • Regular feedback from mentors and peers, with assessments based on contributions to projects, creativity, teamwork, technical skills, and professional growth.
    • Portfolio Development:
      • Students will compile a portfolio showcasing their work, including recordings, event footage, marketing materials, project reports, and edited videos. Students will be encouraged to leverage their portolios when navigating the job and internship marketplace, granting them a competitive advantage.
  1. Networking Opportunities:

    • Industry Panels & Networking Events:
      • Hosted networking events with industry professionals. Panel discussions will cover trends and career paths in music, radio, production, and event management.
    • Alumni Network:
      • Graduates will be encouraged to join an alumni network for ongoing connections and support in their professional journeys.

Outcome:

Graduates will have a robust portfolio, hands-on experience, and a network of industry contacts, preparing them for successful careers in music, radio, event production, audio engineering, video production, business management, marketing, and promotions.
